Gunthorpe Hall is a large part Georgian, part Victorian Hall in North Norfolk
about five miles inland from the sea. It grew in size slowly from the mid
17th Century to Victorian times to about forty rooms in the main house with a separate
stable block and coach house. The Hall, part of which was designed by Sir
John Soane, is a listed building of historic and architectural interest.
Soane was appointed as architect to design The Bank of England in 1778, and his
plans for Gunthorpe Hall are now in the Soane Museum in London.
The Hall is privately owned and when purchased in 1980 had lain vacant and
untended for seven years. This emptiness and lack of care combined with
years of structural neglect meant that the house was riddled with dry rot and
desperately in need of restoration. For seven years a phased programme for
The Hall's restoration was run using a combination of local professionals and
live-in craftspeople. As a community began to live in The Hall, so it
returned to life. The restoration of the main part of The Hall was
completed in 1987. All necessary structural and practical changes were
made during restoration, at the same time efforts were made to keep The Hall
basically unaltered while bringing it into the twentieth century.
The Georgian and Victorian wings were divided from The Hall making them each
self-contained. The Georgian Wing, called Wing House, is available to let
for self catering holidays. Self-contained accommodation has been created
within The Hall for the managing couple and staff. The rest of The Hall,
which retains the character of a private house, is also available for
letting. The fact that The Hall has been completed in the style of a
private home greatly adds to the entertainment and enjoyment of visiting
guests. This makes it a perfect place for family reunions, holidays with
friends, celebrations or weddings. It is also an excellent venue for group
activity holidays and courses such as music, art, bird watching, nature studies,
photography, cooking and corporate training or brainstorming breaks. The
main hall itself can accommodate up to thirty people, depending on how the rooms
are utilized. If Wing House is included groups of forty can be
accommodated.
